What is Reiki?
If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “What is Reiki?” you’re not alone.
Reiki is a form of energy healing that helps restore your body’s natural healing abilities. It works by moving through areas of dense or stagnant energy, helping everything begin to flow freely again.
When energy flows freely, we feel calmer. Clearer. More grounded. More like ourselves.
Reiki can help with physical symptoms, but it also works to balance you mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Many people seek Reiki during stressful seasons of life, while others come simply because they feel “off” and want support returning to alignment.
Whether you’re completely new to energy healing or curious about booking your first session, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Reiki.
Where Did Reiki Come From?
Reiki originated in Japan in the early 1900s and was developed by Mikao Usui. The word “Reiki” translates to “universal life energy.”
The practice is based on the understanding that energy flows through all living things. This life force energy moves through pathways in and around the body. When that energy becomes blocked or stagnant - often due to stress, trauma, emotional overwhelm, or illness - we may begin to feel unwell.
That imbalance can show up as:
Physical tension or discomfort
Anxiety or racing thoughts
Fatigue
Poor sleep
Emotional reactivity
Feeling disconnected from yourself
Reiki works to gently clear and rebalance that energy so your body can return to its natural state of harmony.
How Does Reiki Work?
Reiki practitioners act as a channel for universal life force energy.
During a session, Reiki energy flows through the practitioner’s hands into the client’s energy field and body. The energy naturally moves to the areas that need support most - helping release blocks, calm the nervous system, and restore balance.
It’s important to understand:
Reiki is not forced.
It is not invasive.
It does not manipulate the body.
It supports your body’s innate ability to heal itself.
One way to think about Reiki is like clearing a river. When debris builds up, the water struggles to flow smoothly. Once the debris is cleared, the river naturally finds its rhythm again.
Your body is the same way.
What Happens During a Reiki Session?
I offer Reiki sessions both:
In person in Charlottetown, PEI
Distance Reiki via Zoom
During an in-person Reiki session, you’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table, fully clothed. The environment is calm and peaceful. I place my hands lightly on or just above different areas of your body, allowing energy to flow where it’s needed.
Distance Reiki works in a similar way. Energy is not limited by physical space, so whether you are in the room with me or connecting virtually, the experience can be equally powerful.
Sessions typically last around 60 minutes.
Many clients describe it as one of the most deeply relaxing experiences they’ve had.
What Does Reiki Feel Like?
Every experience is unique.
Some people feel warmth or tingling in certain areas of the body. Others feel a sense of heaviness or lightness. Some experience emotional release, while others simply feel deeply calm.
Common sensations include:
Warmth in the hands or body
Gentle pulsing or tingling
A sense of floating
Emotional clarity
Mental quiet
Falling asleep
There is no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.
Even if you “don’t feel much,” the energy is still working.
Benefits of Reiki
People come to Reiki for a variety of reasons.
While Reiki is not a substitute for medical care, many clients report experiencing:
Reduced stress
Less anxiety and a quieter mind
Improved sleep
Increased energy
Emotional balance
Relief from physical tension
A stronger sense of clarity and alignment
One of the most common shifts I see is people moving from feeling overwhelmed and mentally busy to calm and steady.
Reiki supports the nervous system, which plays a major role in stress and overall health. When the nervous system relaxes, the body can begin to repair and restore itself.
Reiki for Stress and Anxiety
Many people seek Reiki specifically for stress and anxiety.
Modern life often keeps us in a constant state of “fight or flight.” Over time, that chronic stress can impact sleep, digestion, mood, and overall well-being.
Reiki encourages the body to shift into a parasympathetic (rest and repair) state. This is why many people report:
Better sleep
Reduced racing thoughts
Feeling grounded
Improved focus
Emotional steadiness
Reiki doesn’t remove life’s challenges - but it helps you respond to them from a calmer place.
Who Is Reiki For?
Reiki is for anyone who:
Feels stressed or burned out
Has trouble sleeping
Struggles with anxiety or a racing mind
Feels energetically “off”
Is moving through grief or transition
Is on a personal growth or spiritual journey
You do not need to be spiritual. You do not need to believe in anything specific. You simply need to be open to receiving.
Is Reiki Safe?
Yes. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive practice.
It works alongside other wellness practices and medical treatments. It does not diagnose or treat medical conditions, but it can be a supportive complementary therapy.
If you have health concerns, Reiki can be used in partnership with your existing care plan.
Reiki Training and Certification
In addition to offering Reiki sessions in Charlottetown, PEI and distance Reiki via Zoom, I also offer Reiki training. Many people feel called to learn Reiki for personal growth, while others wish to become certified practitioners.
